Weekly Food For Thought

Dancer & Dance

Dance Dance Dance
Dancer and the dance
Dance without the Dancer unthinkable
Dancer without the Dance unknowable
One rooted in the depths of stillness
And the other revealed as the exuberance of movement
One a huge warehouse of memory
And the other a limitless potential & possibility
Yet, Dance & The Dancer are forever inextricably One

Involve yourself deeply and there is only the dance
See a bit more clearly and there is only the dancer
The dance on the surface
And the dancer at its core
Aren’t they different layers of a single reality?
Views simply from different vantage points?
Intertwined in endless harmony of melody & rhythm
The Dance & The Dancer are forever inextricably One

Call it dance and dancer
Creation and creator Or Purusha and Prakriti
It is life in all its grandeur, glory & beauty
The one masquerading as two!
Involve to experience the exuberance of movement
Watch to know the tranquility of stillness
Stay on the surface and be a joyful puppet
Or touch the core and be the mighty puppeteer
Whatever the experience no harm really done
As the dance and the dancer are forever inextricably One

Endless cycles of stillness & movement
Of silence & sound, Of being and becoming
Is this the game of life?
The one who knows action in inaction & inaction in action
Is the wise one they say
The one who sees the scape in which this dance is revealed
Is the wise one they say
Call it the eternal witness or the absolute source
Dance & Dancer are but mere modifications of that indivisible, immutable One!

  1. Random movements of the body cannot be called as a dance. The dance has a rhythm and order; coherence and integration; perfect organization and synchronicity. There is harmony in dance with eyes, hand, neck, hands and legs movements. The dancer will be forgotten if the performance (dance) is exemplary.
Shiva is Nataraja, the eternal dancer and his dance is equated to the creation. The circle around the Nataraja represents the cosmos. In the perfect creation, the creator is forgotten. To identify the dancer, one has to stop focusing on the movements and recognize the performer underneath the movements.
The secret of the macrocosm can be understood in the functioning of microcosm. The cosmos is the interplay between dynamic and static energy flow. Even the constant movements of subatomic particles within a static cell is viewed as dance.
The movement is possible on a static medium. Like a dance on a static dais; movie on static screen. Every one of us is part of the cosmic dance. Being blinded by the vibrancy we miss the prevailing stillness within!
You are the center on which the whole cosmos revolves. Find your ‘center’ and the mystery of the cosmic dance gets unraveled!
